Is HDD drilling mud toxic?
HDD drilling mud itself is not inherently toxic, but its safety depends on the additives used. Many common water-based drilling fluid components are considered low-toxicity; however, certain chemicals, polymers, or contaminants introduced during drilling can make the mud irritating or mildly hazardous if handled improperly. To ensure safety, proper PPE should always be worn when mixing, handling, or disposing of drilling fluids and additives, and product-specific Safety Data Sheets (SDS) should always be reviewed.
