Cellophane can be used as a sealing agent supplement with other lost circulation materials in water-based drilling muds. It can also be added to cement slurries to provide a matting effect that helps control losses. As a preventative measure, typical addition rates are up to 2% by weight of cement.

Lost circulation during a primary cementing job can create serious challenges and may lead to remedial cementing. These losses often occur in vuggy, cavernous formations or highly fractured, incompetent zones that can break down at relatively low hydrostatic pressures.

Cellophane is widely used in routine cementing operations to help control losses by providing a matting effect in the cement slurry. Application rates may vary between 1 and 20 kg/m³, with normal applications around 5 kg/m³ of cement. At concentrations above 20 kg/m³, bulk loading and mixing the cement slurry can become extremely difficult.

Cellophane does have temperature limitations, but even in high-temperature environments, it is generally effective long enough to provide value during the cementing operation.

In non-oilfield applications, cellophane can be used as a sealing agent supplement with other lost circulation materials. Its clear, multi-sized polycellulose flakes help provide bridging support in low and normal density slurries without affecting compressive strength.

Cellophane is non-toxic, biodegradable, chemically inert, and environmentally safe, making it a practical option for non-oilfield loss control applications where material compatibility and environmental considerations are important.

Oilfield and Non-Oilfield Applications: Mix cellophane into a viscous mud with agitation. Cellophane will not pass through the shaker screen, so the shale shaker must be bypassed to maintain the desired cellophane concentration in the mud. Bypassing the shaker may result in plugged jets.

Cementing Applications: Add cellophane to the cement slurry in the mix tub before displacement. No special mixing precautions are required, but care should be taken to avoid adding the product too quickly, as cellophane may have a tendency to plug lines.
